This research also investigates the impacts of HD vehicles on total emissions by pollutant type; HD vehicles in the United States are mostly diesel-fueled commercial trucks. This paper examines the characteristics of LD and HD vehicle emissions and their sensitivity to average travel speed. The potential contribution of HD vehicles in reducing emissions through congestion management is also assessed, with consideration of variable emissions rates and travel demand volumes.

Efficient determination of vehicle emission factors by fuel use category using on-road measurements: downward trends on Los Angeles freight corridor I-710.
To evaluate the success of vehicle emissions regulations, trends in both fleet-wide average emissions as well as high-emitter emissions are needed, but it is challenging to capture the full spread of vehicle emission factors (EFs) with chassis dynamometer or tunnel studies, and remote sensing studies cannot evaluate particulate compounds. We developed an alternative method that links real-time ...
متن کاملA Fuel-Based Inventory for Heavy-Duty Diesel Truck Emissions
A fuel-based method for estimating heavy-duty diesel truck emissions is described. In this method, emission factors are normalized to fuel consumption; vehicle activity is measured by the amount of diesel fuel consumed. For the San Francisco Bay Area during summer 1996, on-road heavy-duty diesel trucks were estimated at the upper bound to emit 110 × 103 kg/day of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 3.7 ×...
متن کاملComparison of life cycle greenhouse gases from natural gas pathways for medium and heavy-duty vehicles.
The low-cost and abundant supply of shale gas in the United States has increased the interest in using natural gas for transportation. We compare the life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from different natural gas pathways for medium and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs). For Class 8 tractor-trailers and refuse trucks, none of the natural gas pathways provide emissions reductions per unit of fre...
متن کاملEvaluating speed differences between passenger vehicles and heavy trucks for transportation-related emissions modeling.
Heavy-duty trucks make up only 3% of the on-road vehicle fleet, yet they account for > 7% of vehicle miles traveled in the United States. They also contribute a significant proportion of regulated ambient emissions. Heavy vehicles emit emissions at different rates than passenger vehicles. They may also behave differently on-road, yet may be treated similarly to passenger vehicles in emissions m...
متن کاملImplications of Measured In-Use Light Duty Gasoline Vehicle Emissions for Emission Inventory Development at High Spatial and Temporal Resolution
The objective here is to evaluate the intra-and inter-vehicle variability in realworld light-duty gasoline vehicle emissions and assess implications for development of onroad vehicle emission inventories. A field study was conducted to characterize variability for selected vehicles for both total emissions and emission rates by routes, time of day, road grade, and among vehicles. Real-world dat...
